Shallow Water Gag Grouper Fishing

Gag grouper season is upon us, with fish moving into shallower waters, making them accessible without a long run offshore. We target these fish on nearshore structure, ledges, and hard bottom off Anna Maria Island.

Gear & Bait Setup

Getting gag grouper out of shallow structure requires heavy gear to prevent break-offs.

Baits: Live pinfish, grunts, and whole squid are top producers. Trolling large, deep-diving plugs over rocky bottom is also an effective way to trigger reaction strikes.

Tackle: We use heavy fluorocarbon leaders—typically 60 to 80 lb test—paired with strong circle hooks and heavy drag settings to turn their heads before they rock you.

All trips depart directly from Kingfish Boat Ramp in Holmes Beach, getting us straight out to the fishing grounds.
